The Trotter Group met in Louisville, Ky., for the first time as it
toured the Muhammad
Ali Center, debated the role of race in the Obama presidency, and
heard experts on health care reform and, as the nation undertakes the
2010 census, America's changing demographics.
Via Skype, New York Times columnist Bill Rhoden led the workshop, "Are
Intercollegiate Athletes the New Plantation?” Members discussed column-writing
in the era of blogs, Facebook and Twitter.
Sculptor Ed Hamilton led Trotter members through the politics and craftsmanship
of his Lincoln Memorial in Louisville, and his scultped tributes to
Booker T. Washington, Joe Louis, the Amistad captives and the African
American Civil War veterans.
The Louisville Courier-Journal and the University of Louisville were
among our hosts.
